Kuwait Tech Scene

Within the past several years there have been increasing demand by young people to create and grow a healthy and productive technology community in the country. While there exist societies such as the Kuwait Information Technology Society and the Library and Information Association of Kuwait there is still a need for applied technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and an increasingly fast paced attraction of global technologies. What currently exists in the country is not enough, and there are people who have stepped forward to bring events to Kuwait that may very well be the beginning of a bright future for technology and the information sciences in Kuwait.

There have been several events during the past week, I’m not sure if it was a coincidence but this week has been very busy.

On Saturday 3rd of November 2012, Barcamp Kuwait 4 was held. It took place in the regency hotel and it started at around 3 pm and finished at about 10 pm. The event was sponsored by Microsoft and there were refreshments and light dinner as well.

The Barcamp event is an unconference, meaning it doesn’t follow standard conference guidelines and it is open to the public, and there are many on-the-spot presentations! If you’re interested in tech in general or tech in Kuwait be sure to check out the events. It is also a great networking opportunity.

On Wednesday 7th of November, StartupQ8 held its second event at the Global Investment House building where presentations were given to introduce Lean Startup Model and a Skype conversation with an organization jump-starting the startup scene in Ghana. The presentations were then followed by a networking session and pizza and drinks.

All in all, it has been a very eventful week and I have certainly met some very bright people. I’d like to thank everyone who attended and help make these events possible. It is an exciting time and I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you happen to know about other events please do share in the comments below.

Barcamp Kuwait #2

Progress is when there is a measurable state of change between a previous moment and a current moment in a positive direction. At least, that is how I like to define it. That is what I saw yesterday when I attended Barcamp at the Movenpick hotel in Bidaa area.

There were true brilliant minds working together and collaborating and sharing ideas and giving feedback. I haven’t seen people working together like that for quite some time. It was truly inspiring to see such people get together to discuss technology and information – from design concepts to ethical issues related to data collection and usage.
